What you get

If you want to drive a vehicle with an air brake or an air-over-hydraulic brake system, you need a Z endorsement on your driver’s licence in Ontario.

Topstone Career College provides a certified instructor that will conduct the 12 hours of the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) approved Air Brake Endorsement Course.

Most commercial trucks use an air brake system in order to operate. The Air Brake Endorsement course is necessary for those who want to be qualified for the A, B, C, and D licenses.

You will learn about the air brake system components. Inspection requirements and troubleshooting of the air brake system are the major components of this program.

Upon the successful completion of the program, the students will be required to visit a Drive Test centre to have the “Z” endorsement placed on their license

This endorsement must be renewed every 5 years with a written test.

Be at least 18 years old

Hold a valid Ontario G License or higher

Attend the total of 12 hours of in-class and practical training

Performing a routine inspection of the air brake system and its components

A 20-question written test will be administered at the end of the course. Upon successful completion of the written test, a practical examination will also be conducted on a tractor-trailer.

How To Renew Your Air Brake (Z) Endorsement Licence

As of September 1, 2023, MTO is providing a more flexible, modernized option for drivers to renew air brake endorsements.

To renew your air brake endorsement you must now complete the Air Brakes Refresher Training module online before going to a DriveTest centre to renew your air brakes (z) endorsement. This online module was developed in response to industry feedback and eliminates the need to complete a knowledge test at a DriveTest centre at the time of renewal.

When you register for the online training module, you’ll be asked to provide your name and email address. You must use your full name as it appears on your driver’s licence so that DriveTest staff can verify that the information on your certificate matches the information on your driver’s licence.

After completing the module online, you will need to show your certificate of completion to staff at a DriveTest centre, to proceed with your renewal.
